Getting Around La Spezia: Transport & Tourist Services

La Spezia is the perfect gateway for exploring the Gulf of Poets and the Cinque Terre. Whether you prefer traveling by rail or sailing the turquoise waters, here is everything you need to know to navigate the area like a local.

1. By Train: The Cinque Terre Express

The fastest way to reach the five villages. From La Spezia Centrale station, trains depart every 15–20 minutes during the high season.

  • Cinque Terre Train MS Card: This all-in-one pass includes unlimited travel on the La Spezia – Levanto line, access to hiking trails, station Wi-Fi, and the use of local shuttle buses within the parks.

  • 2026 Rates: Prices are based on a tiered system (A, B, or C) depending on the date of your visit.

    • Discounts: Reduced rates are available for children under 12 and family groups.

  • Pro Tip: Buy your card online or at the "Cinque Terre Points" inside the station to skip the long ticket machine lines.

2. By Sea: Ferries & Boat Tours

Seeing the coastline from the water offers a unique perspective you can't get from the train. Ferries depart from Molo Italia (located along the palm-lined Passeggiata Morin).

  • Main Routes: Direct links to Portovenere, Palmaria Island, Lerici, and the Cinque Terre villages (except Corniglia, which has no pier).

  • Island Hopping: Don’t miss the "Three Islands Tour" (Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto) or sunset cruises featuring local wine and focaccia.

  • Seasonality: Boats generally run from late March to early November, subject to sea and weather conditions.

3. By Car: Parking & ZTL Zones

The historical center of La Spezia is a Restricted Traffic Zone (ZTL). If you are arriving by car, we recommend using these "Park & Ride" options:

  • Piazza d'Armi Parking: Free of charge and connected to the city center and station by frequent shuttle buses.

  • Palaspezia (Centro): Located near the highway exit; a convenient spot to leave your car and take a quick bus ride into town.

  • Stazione Park (Railway Station): An underground paid parking lot located directly beneath the tracks. It is the most convenient for day-trippers but fills up very early.

4. Essential Tourist Services

  • Tourist Information (IAT): Offices are located in Via del Prione and inside the Central Station for maps, event schedules, and local advice.

  • Electric Bike Sharing: A great way to explore the waterfront and the Port Mirabello marina.

  • Public Elevators: To reach the San Giorgio Castle and enjoy a panoramic view of the harbor, use the free public elevators connecting the pedestrian Via del Prione to the upper streets.

If you plan to walk the famous Via dell'Amore (now fully reopened), please note that a timed entry reservation is mandatory, even if you already hold a Cinque Terre Card.
